Norwegian Star Earflap Hats

Living in Idaho has been a challenge weather-wise for my sister.  She never quite knows what to expect and now that it is December, it has gotten quite chilly there.  She requested that I knit some earflap hats for her family and since I love knitting hats, I willingly obliged and finished them last month.  This is what I'm calling my Norwegian Star Earflap Hats:

This one was for her toddler son, Simon:

This one is for my sister, Brandi:

I was able to snap a quick picture of the two of them wearing their hats when they were here visiting over Thanksgiving (not an easy task with a moving toddler that wants to be eating rather than wearing a hat):

I also knitted one for her hubby, Gabe.  He wasn't able to come for Thanksgiving so here's my 5 yo son modeling Gabe's hat. (He reminds me of Sunbonnet Sue wearing this oversized hat):

Here are all three hats together (they kind of remind me of jelly fish like this):

These hats were my own pattern, knitted with Cascade 220 in two different shades of grey on US #8 needles.  Have I ever mentioned that I love Cascade 220?  It comes in so many different color choices, is reasonably priced and is lovely to knit with.  I don't think I did too badly winging it with the pattern.  If you're interested, I'll write up the pattern and post it.  I hope December is treating you all well!

Edited to add: Here is the pattern:

EDITED AGAIN WITH CORRECTIONS (THANKS PAM Z!)

I have also added the pattern to my sidebar for downloading.  I have never written a pattern for someone else to follow so please let me know of any errors you may find.  Also e-mail me if you have any questions at all.  Thanks!

Oh, please do write up the pattern!! Those hats are fantastic! It gets pretty cold here in NJ too.

Please do write up the pattern! I've been looking all over for an earflap hat pattern that I like and this one is beautiful.

I love the hats! As a norwegian I love your norwegian star :) This might have to go on my todo list as well. That list is getting long!

These hats are stunningly beautiful! Thank you ever so much for writing up the pattern, I will definitely try it out!

Beautiful hats, and your sister is very lucky to have someone knit such gorgeous things for her.

Those are perfect! Great job and thank you thank you for writing up the pattern! Perfect hat for the snow too :)

Hi Tiennie...thank you for the lovely pattern...I think I may well knit my granddaughters' one each out of the yarn that is left over from the Tulip cardigans I am making them. I do love your clear photography too!

Oh I like these hats. Thanks for sharing the pattern too! You inspire.

Happy Holidays

They're lovely Tiennie - they remind me of some of the Elizabeth Zimmermann projects I've seen. Nice photographs - the one of your nephew looking over the balcony is very sweet.

Those are great! I can't wait to try that pattern out.

Now you know we were going to ask for the pattern! LOL :oD

Love the trio!

I love the hat. It's just perfect for some of those new babies around my neighborhood, now that it's getting somewhat breezy (ignore the 78 in todays forcast). Thanks for the pattern.

The hats are gorgeous! What a great pattern. Thanks so much for sharing it with everyone. :)

Very cool hats -- thanks so much for sharing the pattern!

Thanks Tiennie!! I love Cascade 220 as well, so versatile...

Adorable! I love these. Thank you so much for the pattern. I can't wait to make one!

You are so sweet! You always impress me with your ability to crank out things in sets of twos and threes!

Love the hats! And a big hats-off to you for being able to stick with patterns for more than just one FO... could you teach me to do the same? :-)

I'm not much of a hat person, but I love those! And I love Cascade 220 too. It's such a great value. I'm sure your sister will appreciate warm heads this winter.

So cute! Thanks for writing up the pattern!

tiennie, i LOVE those hats!
beautiful work, and thank you so much for the pattern!
fabulous!

THANKS, Tiennie! I just printed the pattern off and will be using it to knit a hat for my great-nephew and some of the little 'hatless' kiddos at church. You are wonderful!

What a lovely set of hats. And they don't look overly cutesy matchy together. Thanks for the pattern!

These are just fabulous! What a wonderful job you did at your first public pattern attempt, too. :) I hope that everyone loves them - they really are great!

So cute Tiennie! Good work.

Blessings (that'll have to do until Monday...)

Oh, those are absolutely adorable! What a great pattern; thanks for posting it. I agree that Cascade 220 is such a nice workhorse yarn.

The hats are so cute, I think I'll have to make Robby and I matching ones, fantastic job! And thanks for putting up the pattern!

Great hats!

That's too cute. Thanks for the pattern.

Wonderful hats and so sweet of you to write up the patern! Thanks a million! :)

Wonderful hats!!! Thanks so much for sharing the pattern! I've been wanting to try some colorwork and these could be a perfect intro for me... hmmmmm...

Great pattern! Thanks so much! Are you going to add the pattern to Ravelry? If so, I'd love to queue it!

Hooray for your first pattern! They look great -- the transition to the earflap is nice and smooth, which is often not the case.

Wow, cool! Congratulations on your first pattern! They are lovely. You're so creative.

Your knitting is always perfectly lovely, but my favorite thing about it is that your FOs always seem to illustrate the closeness of family. Thanks so much for sharing!

Those look great! I love that they all match!

Wonderful hats! Thanks for the pattern!

I love the hats and the different sizes, esp. the snowflake design. Thanks for the pattern!

Love the hats! Thanks for the pattern!

The hats are great & the ear flaps are so useful. You are a great sister & thanks for the pattern!

Love the hats. Great shade of gray and love the snowflakes. How neat to have matching hats for the family. Wish we could get some real snow!!!
