Living in Idaho has been a challenge weather-wise for my sister. She never quite knows what to expect and now that it is December, it has gotten quite chilly there. She requested that I knit some earflap hats for her family and since I love knitting hats, I willingly obliged and finished them last month. This is what I'm calling my Norwegian Star Earflap Hats:
This one was for her toddler son, Simon:
This one is for my sister, Brandi:
I was able to snap a quick picture of the two of them wearing their hats when they were here visiting over Thanksgiving (not an easy task with a moving toddler that wants to be eating rather than wearing a hat):
I also knitted one for her hubby, Gabe. He wasn't able to come for Thanksgiving so here's my 5 yo son modeling Gabe's hat. (He reminds me of Sunbonnet Sue wearing this oversized hat):
Here are all three hats together (they kind of remind me of jelly fish like this):
These hats were my own pattern, knitted with Cascade 220 in two different shades of grey on US #8 needles. Have I ever mentioned that I love Cascade 220? It comes in so many different color choices, is reasonably priced and is lovely to knit with. I don't think I did too badly winging it with the pattern. If you're interested, I'll write up the pattern and post it. I hope December is treating you all well!
Edited to add: Here is the pattern:
EDITED AGAIN WITH CORRECTIONS (THANKS PAM Z!)
I have also added the pattern to my sidebar for downloading. I have never written a pattern for someone else to follow so please let me know of any errors you may find. Also e-mail me if you have any questions at all. Thanks!

They DO look like jellyfish!! ;o) Warm and toasty jellyfish! lol

Hi Tiennie...thank you for the lovely pattern...I think I may well knit my granddaughters' one each out of the yarn that is left over from the Tulip cardigans I am making them. I do love your clear photography too!

They're lovely Tiennie - they remind me of some of the Elizabeth Zimmermann projects I've seen. Nice photographs - the one of your nephew looking over the balcony is very sweet.

I love the hat. It's just perfect for some of those new babies around my neighborhood, now that it's getting somewhat breezy (ignore the 78 in todays forcast). Thanks for the pattern.

Hooray for your first pattern! They look great -- the transition to the earflap is nice and smooth, which is often not the case.
